Getting Started

The Bamboo Island Approach begins here. A few minutes of setup makes everything that follows smoother — here's the path from a fresh install to their first story.

  1. Install the app
    Get it on Google Play
    On Google Play the app is listed as Bamboo Island: Learn Chinese — search for that name, or tap the badge above to go straight there. Once installed, the label under the icon on the home screen reads simply Bamboo Island (the store listing and the home-screen label are different on purpose — the store name helps you find it, the shorter label keeps it readable on the screen). On first launch it builds its libraries in the background — this can take up to half a minute, so let it sit undisturbed on that first open. You'll know it's ready when the home screen shows the sample stories and talks.

    While you wait: you may briefly see a blank screen, then small spinning rings appear as each page loads its content. That's normal — a spinner always means "loading, please wait," never "frozen." The first open takes the longest because it's seeding the sample content; afterwards everything opens in a snap.
  2. Meet the home screen
    The home screen is a map of five paths: Stories, Talks, Reading, Flashcards, and Remember — plus Guide and Settings at the bottom. Everything starts here.

  1. Set the display language Settings → Appearance
    Bamboo Island can show English only (the default — best for beginners building confidence) or Chinese + English together (once you start recognizing characters). Open Settings, tap Edit at the top, and choose under Language. Tap the ◀ chevron in the header to navigate between the two nav pages.
  2. Choose a Chinese voice Settings → Voice
    This is the most important step for listening practice. The app uses your device's text-to-speech voices. Under Voice, pick a Chinese voice and adjust the speaking rate (slower for beginners). If no Chinese voice appears, your device needs one installed — see Settings → Voices for how to add one.

  1. Create your first story
    Open Stories, tap 📝 New to make a category (like "My Family"), then inside it tap 📝 New again to write a story. Type or speak (🎤) a few lines, and tap ✨ AI Translate to turn English into Chinese. Want to type Chinese directly? See Typing Chinese. See the full Stories walkthrough →
  2. Build the daily routine
    Once a story or two exists, Flashcards fills with review cards automatically, and you can practice characters in Remember. Set a daily reminder in Settings → Review so practice becomes a habit.
💡 You can't break anything

Delete buttons are off by default — content can't be removed by accident. You can explore freely. And the sample content can always be restored from Settings → Data → Restore samples. When you're familiar with the app, Clear samples (same place) gives your family a fresh start with your own stories, talks, and review cards.

⭐ Rate your content

Tap the stars under any story or talk to rate it 1–5. Then sort your lists by Rating to bring your favorites to the top, or filter by minimum rating to focus on what matters most. Category ratings are the average of everything inside them.
